Seventeen students arrive early at school every Thursday morning to build and program a Lego robot. They learn basic programming logic to make the robot follow a prescribed path. This is an elective for seventh and eight grade students.
On April 27th, 2007, the Robotics class attended the first ever Dallas Diocese Trinity River Challenge Lego Robotics Competition at Christ the King School . There were 11 schools involved in various robot contests and over 100 students in attendance. With the great success of this first contest, we are hoping for another one in the Fall of 2007. St. Patrick took 17 students who made up four separate teams. One of our teams took 2nd place! After the contest, we saw a slide show presented by two engineering instructors from SMU. They had previously worked for the U.S. Government (via contractors) on confidential weapons systems and their discussion about applied engineering really hit home with what we are doing with Lego Robotics engineering and programming. Carol Mayo, Technology Consultant for the Dallas Diocese, Ron Hudson from Christ the King, and Billy Compton from St. Pats will also be working to see that a high school program is started next year so our 8th graders can continue this curriculum. Billy said about the contest, "A great time was had by all and congratulations to all my kids this year."
