The Stock Market Game is an investment simulation sponsored by the Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education. Locally the game is sponsored and supported by the Dallas Morning News N.I.E. program. The game is being used on the World Wide Web. The web site is used to register for the game, to learn about the SMG educational program, to use related teacher resources, and to buy and sell stocks.
The Stock Market Game is a cross curriculum activity that includes the subjects of business, economics, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and technology through the use of the Internet.
Saint Patrick 8th grade math classes have participated in the Stock Market Game for eight years. SMG is now an exciting part of the 8th grade math program. The game plays for ten weeks in the fall and again in the spring. The class is divided into teams of 3 to 5 students. Each team elects officers and determines team responsibility. The teacher supports the game by generating the reporting forms, communicating with the Dallas Morning News game coordinator, monitoring the e-mail information, attending a game workshop, teaching the game rules and information about the stock market, and arranging for a guest speaker and the support of a Stock Broker. Newspapers are delivered daily for student use. Teams compile information from the game and analyze the stock performance at the end of the game. This becomes their quarter project and counts as a test grade.
This year we have 49 students and 10 teams participating in the game. The movement of the market has been a challenge during this fall game. We are still doing well in the standings - some of the teams! Some teams have found sources of their own for tips on stocks. Students enjoy using the Internet for researching companies and comparing stock performance and for transactions. Two teams from Saint Patrick placed in the top three in the region for the fall 1999 game and were recognized by the Dallas Morning News at an award banquet. The excitement was amazing, We are hoping that we can win again and have the honor of attending the banquet. The Dallas Morning News does a fabulous job of the award banquet and of supporting the game.
