MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math coaching and competition program whose mission is to increase interest and involvement in mathematics among all middle school students. The MATHCOUNTS foundation creates and distributes a student handbook annually to schools across the country. The MATHCOUNTS curriculum focuses on problem solving and problem solving strategies.
St. Patrick 7th and 8th grade students have participated in the MATHCOUNTS program for about 11 years. The material is used to enrich the math curriculum and to coach a MATHCOUNTS team for school and regional competitions. The math team is coached by Ms. Carol McDermott and supported by parent volunteers. We are especially pleased to have the support of engineers, accountants or an actuary.
For additional information: Contact Carol McDermott - I will be happy to help you get started with the MATHCOUNTS program. This material is absolutely wonderful. The kids love it, and there are a wide variety of problems not found in most math textbooks. The National Society of Professional Engineers is one of the founding sponsors. The involvement of these professionals and other noteworthy sponsors accounts for the exceptional quality of the program and material generated. Schools are not required to participate in competitions in order to receive the material.
